I played this gig with #thepickletones PRE-COVID back in January 2020, and finally finished editing it. Check out the full set via the linktree in my bio. Here are some cute moments.

I’ve also linked my first EVER set I properly edited. Which coincidentally, was also filmed at same place and with #thepickletones! No idea when it was filmed though, maybe 2018?

For the early stuff, I only had one camera to record with, so had to be creative with the editing style. A whooole lotta jump cuts and meme zooms

1st clip - probably my favourite performance of my recital. All the overplaying, nervous energy was almost gone by the 3rd song.

2nd clip - A song I wrote especially for the recital. There’s a mixture of cringe and pride when I listen to it. Mostly because of the singing.

I’ve been sitting on this footage for a while an

I’ve been sitting on this footage for a while and I NEVER wanted anyone to see it (except immediate family, because Mum needs something to show friends and family). It’s my final recital for uni and it’s okay. It’s not great but it’s not terrible, it’s kinda mediocre, but I got a 70/100 from faculty. That sums it up well, a credit.

I haven’t been able to watch this in one sitting. All I hear is me making all the typical ‘jazz school’ mistakes. Waaaay too many notes, trying to play ideas that I didn’t practiced enough, playing ‘out’ when I was really just playing wrong notes. The thing is, I put my heart and soul into this performance.

I would have put 100+ hours into this recital. Between organising a 9-piece band with charts and rehearsals, getting a videographer to film, plus my time spent practicing, AND I think I cut 2-3 songs ON THE DAY. There’s two keyboards in the background of all the shots which were never used because the actual final song was cut for time (BY THE JUDGING PANEL). Also, I recorded and mixed the audio which, I think, also sounds just okay. I think @raviwelsh (who just happened to be in the audience) helped by monitoring my laptop. But this was the culmination of a 4 year degree, and after everything I’d put into it, my performance was 70/100 - okay.

I think the reason I never wanted anyone to see this also affects my playing. Ego.

My self worth was tied to the performance. Playing well, in my mind, meant I was valuable. And it caused me to overplay, rush learning, and play things I thought would make me seem cool. I want to move past this, and I think that putting this out there moves me in the right direction. Though I’m probably going to take it down after a month or so, even after ~3 years, it still stings to watch this and I’m not truly happy to let this be out on display.
